SCATTER (Sprawling Cities And TransporT: from Evaluation to Recommendations) is a research project funded by European Commission DG Research under the 5th Framework Programme (Thematic Programme 'Energy Environment and Sustainable Development' and Key Action 4 'City of Tomorrow and Sustainable Development'). The project is also part of the LUTR (Land Use and Transport Research) cluster which links several different projects in the area of sustainable urban mobility, including land use, transportation, and the environment. SCATTER is managed by a consortium of eight European partners involved in leading edge research and lan-use/transport policy analysis.

The aim of the work is to improve the understanding of the mechanisms of urban sprawl and its impacts through review of sprawl impacts and measurement techniques; qualitative and quantitative analysis of sprawl in six case cities (Bristol, Brussels, Helsinki, Milan, Rennes and Stuttgart); review and evaluation of policy measures dealing with urban sprawl, using land use/transport simulations; measurements of sprawl and creation of an urban sprawl monitoring tool.

The project will provide recommendations to European cities implementing suburban public transport, identifying measures to prevent, mitigate and control urban sprawl. The recommendations will consist of best practices to design accompanying measures, evaluation of their impacts and efficiency, barriers to implementation, and any negative side effects. ...more
