Mike, You may be right about NSF -- I got good comments on a recent application (2 excellent, 1 very good, 5 good) but the panel review focused on the criticisms and went against me. They seem to be very big on detailed specifics of what you intend doing, rather than bigger picture what you want to do stuff -- so a lot of comments were along the lines of "this would be great but I can't see how he's going to do it" -- in my view, that's for me to worry about, not them! Also, it's hard to be specific about details -- if it was that easy, wouldn't we already have done it?! Anyway, maybe see you soon, one way or another. I'll probably shoot for the week after AAG if they still have a slot then (ie March 12, I think). I am going to AAG in New Orleans, although I have my doubts about the usefulness of this meeting -- it goes on far too long (4 days) and the papers (thousands of them) are a very mixed bag. Having said that, like NY a couple years ago, it is a good chance to catch up with a lot of people. For junior US faculty it is pretty essential to show up once in a while just so they know you still exist. I will likely be sharing a room with Torrens... If you do show up then maybe we can get drunk and you can assure me that the NSF does once in a while fund worthwhile work (by which, of course, I mean MINE!). Seriously, grant funding is a total lottery, isn't it? Anyway, Happy New Year to one and all. Great news about Naru. I've been invited to give a talk by the Complex Systems people there, and it might be an opportunity to all catch up.
